How to set up

To set up you CuteFTP to upload when you start you program you will see the "Site Manager" screen .
The example already has several sites set up in it.

  1. Click on "Add Site" Button
    this will bring up the "Add Host" screen
  2. In the "Site Label" box enter a easy to rember name for your site.
    a good idea is to name it after your county.
  3. In the "Host Detect" box use the drop down menu to select "Unix".
    Some will use Auto-Detect, like Fortune City.
  4. In the "Host Address" box add the url for the computer you will connect with
    1. On Rootsweb:
      1. for the USGenWeb Counties this is "users.rootsweb.com".
      2. For the Sponser pages it is "homepages.rootsweb.com"
      3. For the Freepages it is "users.freepages.rootsweb.com"
    2. On Crosswinds this is"ftp.crosswinds.net".
    3. On AOL this is "members.aol.com".
    4. On Fortune City this is "ftp.fortunecity.com".
  5. In the "User ID" box enter the site Id you are given when you set up your account.
    1. On Rootsweb:
      1. For a USGenWeb Countythis is usually your state abrevation &county name, or account name..ie: "coarapah" or "cofremon"
      2. For the Homepages or Freepages on Rootsweb it will be what you named it when you signed up.
    2. On Crosswinds this is your email account name.
    3. On AOL this is your member ID.
    4. On Fortune City this is assigned when you set up your account.
  6. In the "Password" box enter the password that is given you when you set up your account. These are always Case Sensitive! It is a good idea to copy and paste.
    * Note: for an AOL account this will also be your sign on password you use when you sign on the internet.
  7. You can set up where the program will start the Intial Local Directory.
    this is a great time saver.
    1. click on the folder icon next to the "Inital Local Directory" box.
    2. This will bring up a "Browse for Folder" screen.
    3. Choose the drive you have your County located in, then locate your County directory (folder).
      this will allow you to start in your folder every time.


To Make Folders (Directories) on your computer.

  1. in the programs left window you can see the cute ftp program directory. you can use the little folder icon with the up arrow to move through the directories.
  2. when you get it to the drive where you want it, highlight the:
    1. "Commands" at the top of the screen, then scroll down to the "make new directory" option.
      OR
    2. Click on the folder icon at the right on the set of program icons.
  3. you should have a pop up show up that will say on it down half way:
    • Change directory
      and further down
    • Make new directory
  4. use the Make New Directory to make the folder then dubble click on it and enter that folder.

To Download or Upload.

  1. Dubble click on this driectory to enter, then use the Book icon at the top of the program screen, that is right under the word FTP.
  2. This will bring up the Session Manager. and you highlight your county then click on "Connect"
  3. you will see a log on Message pop up. just click on OK.
  4. For a USGenweb County Account Rootsweb you should see three directories in the right hand side of the screen.
    1. For the Freepages Account at Rootsweb you should see several "community" folders.
      Pick where your pages would fit best.
    • archive_ftp
    • archive_html
      and
    • public_html

Download

  1. highlight the page you are downloading from the right side, and the down arrow on the icons above will turn blue when you move your curser over it.
  2. Click on the down arrow, and you will move the page onto your computer.
  3. when you get finished you can just click on the icon that looks like two computers with the stop in front of them. this will dissconnect you from the other computer.
  4. you are now ready to work on the pages.

Upload

  1. On Rootsweb everything needs to be uploaded inside the public_html, it will not be seen unless it is.
  2. Dubble click on the public_html to enter it.
  3. Uploding works the same as downloading but you highlight the file on the left (the one in your computer) and an up arrow icon will turn blue, and you click on it and it will upload the page.
  4. If you are uploading (or downloading) a new version of your page, you will get an Overwrite warrning. You will have three choices:
    • Overwrite
    • Resume
    • Rename
  5. when you get finished you can just click on the icon that looks like two computers with the stop in front of them. this will dissconnect you from the other computer.
