"The Fulkerson papers"
(sometimes referred to as "Volume of Old Settlers") contains
a listing of early Claiborne County, Tennessee, pioneer families. The
information was compiled by Peter G. Fulkerson (born 1840, in
Claiborne County). Mr. Fulkerson was a lawyer and served in the Civil
War from Claiborne County.
The Fulkerson papers contain
information on over 300 early Claiborne County, Tennessee families
with over 4,000 total names. Mr. Fulkerson included the children and
the names of known spouses. In some instances, he recorded the year of
the families arrival in Claiborne County, and where they came from
when they came to the county.
Mr. Fulkerson apparently interviewed
family members and others who were knowledgeable of the the early
familes of Claiborne County and recorded his information in ledger/s.
There have been some instances of
reported errors in the family data such as misplaced children and
incorrect spouses.
Overall the Fulkerson papers are a
great source of early Claiborne County family information and we are
indebted to Mr. Fulkerson for his efforts in compiling and preserving
this valuable genealogical information. The Claiborne County court
house burned in 1838, and some of the family connections contained in
these papers would have been forever lost without his thoughtfulness.
The family information from Mr.
Fulkerson's ledger/s was transcribed from his ledger/s by Georgeanna
Buis Malone with the permission of a granddaughter of Mr. Fulkerson.
In the 1980s, the family information was serialaized (over a period of
several years) by the Claiborne County Historical Society in their
quarterly journal, the "Reflections".
