John Heslets Family

from Pennsylvania to Illinois and parts west

John C. Heslet  was born on 17 Jul 1781 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa.  On 13 Apr 1809, when he. was 27, he married Susannah Ferry, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa.  They had the following children:

 

 

  3     i.     Elizabeth (1812-<1870)

  

       ii.     Isaac.  Born on 3 Feb 1818 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. He married Sarah Junk, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth.  Isaac operated a produce boat on the licking river between various towns and Cincinnati Ohio. Sarah died in 1839 and is buried in the John Baker Cemetery in Campbell co., Kentucky.  Isaac and Sarah had passed this property on the trips down the river and when she died Isaac asked permission from The baker family to have her buried there, because she loved it so.  Her headstone contains "The virtues of an amicable and affectionate wife claims this tribute of affections from a disconsolate husband who trusts her soul rests in heaven."

         v.     Susannah. Born on 12 May 1816 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, Pa. She married William W. Clark on 29 Oct 1833.

 I don't know when Susannah died, but John was married to Eliza Ann Minor on 12 Aug 1825, daughter of Isaac Minor (1769-1836) & Rachel Hamel (~1780-1849), in Uniontown, Dunlap Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. She was born on 2 Jun 1789 in Princeton, Mercer Co., New Jersey.

 

*  John C. and Eliza were on the census for Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  on 14 Sep 1850, he was 69, a farmer and had $4,000 in real estate, she was 52. Children: Martha, Rachel, James, Joseph and Mary Ann.

 

They lived in Fayette Co., Pa until about 1856 when they moved to LaSalle Co., Illinois, settling in Earl Township. John was a farmer.

 

*  John C. and Eliza were on the census for Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 13 Jun 1860, he was 78, a farmer, with $4220 in real estate and $300 personal value. Eliza is 60. Also listed are Martha, James and Joseph.

 

John C. died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 20 Oct 1860.

 

* Eliza Ann was  on the census for Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 23 Jun 1870, she was 81 and living with son Joseph. 
 

 Eliza Ann died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 18 Jan 1878.

  vii.     Rebecca was born on 30 Oct 1834 in Uniontown, Dunbar  Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. She died before 1850.

 

3. Elizabeth Heslet was born in 1812 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. In 1832 when Elizabeth was 20, she married Isaac Par Minor, son of Isaac Minor (1769-1836) & Rachel Hamel (~1780-1849), in Uniontown, Fayette Co., Pa.  Isaac was born on 7 Apr 1807 in Uniontown, Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.

 

*  Isaac  and Elizabeth were on the census for Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois on 12 Jun 1860, he was 53 and she was 48. .

 

Elizabeth died in Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois  before 1870, she was 58.

 

*   Isaac Par Was on the census for Fairview Twp, Bond Co., Illinois on 21 Jul 1870, he was 63.

 

  Isaac  died in Greenville, Bond Co., Illinois on 24 May 1877, he was 70.

 

They had the following children:

i.     Susan.   Born on 31 May 1833 in Uniontown, Dunlap Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.

 

ii.     Rachel Ann. Born in 1837 in Uniontown, Dunlap Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. .

 

iii.     Mary Ellen. Born in 1839 in Uniontown, Dunlap Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  On 28 Aug 1860, when Mary Ellen was     21, she married John H. Maxey in Bond Co., Illinois.

ix.     Robert S. (1853-)  On 7 Apr 1877, when Robert S. was 24, he first married Mary S. Woodsides, in Bond Co., Illinois.  On 18 Oct 1881,  when Robert S. was 28, he second married Jane M. Garrett, in Bond Co., Illinois. 

 

4. John C. Heslet was born on 22 Apr 1823 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa.  About 1849 John married Elizabeth, she was born about 1830 in Pennsylvania.

 

John C. Was on the census for Green Twp, Clinton Co., Ohio on 12 Jun 1860, he was 36, farmer with $5500 real estate and $560 personal value. Elizabeth was 30. Also listed were children Isaac, William and Jacob.

 

They had the following children:

 

i.     Isaac was born  about 1851 in Clinton Co., Ohio.

        

ii.     William was born  about 1855 in Clinton Co., Ohio.

     

iii.     Joseph was born  about 1858 in Clinton Co., Ohio.

 

6. Nancy Heslet was born on 23 Jun 1818 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa.  Nancy married Thomas Junk.  He was born  about 1822 in Union Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  Thomas died in Franklin Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  on 5 Sep 1876, he was 54 .  Nancy died in Franklin Twp, on 11 Jul 1910, she was 92. They are both  buried in Old Laurel Hill Cemetery, Franklin Twp.

 

They had one child:

 

 i.     John Henry was born on 13 Sep 1844 in Union Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. and died on 21 Nov 1919, he was 75.

  

 7.  Martha Heslet was born on 13 Dec 1821 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., Pa. Martha lived with her father and step-mother until her marriage on 27 Nov 1866  to George Guy, in Mendota, Illinois. George was born on 21 Dec 1808 in Westford, Otsego Co., New York.   George farmed in Mendota, LaSalle Co., Illinois. From 1866-1886 he served as Justice of the Peace and in 1886 he served as Town Clerk.   Both George and Martha were Presbyterian. In 1869 George served as  Commissioner to the General Assembly of the New School Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1870 he was  Representative of Mendota Church General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa.  In 1884 he was  Commissioner to General Assembly at Saratoga, New York. They had no children.

 

9. Rachel Heslet. Born on 5 Feb 1830 in Uniontown, Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  On 10 Jun 1857 when Rachel was 27, she married James Lynn,  in LaSalle Co, Illinois. He was  born on 2 May 1822 in Pa.

 

James and Rachel were on the census for Meriden, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 15 Jun 1880; he was 58, a farmer; she was 50, keeping house. Also listed were children Anna and Mamie.

 

James died in Meriden, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 29 Jan 1889, he was 66.  Rachel died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 25 Aug 1895, she was 65.

 

They had the following children:

 

i.     Infant born and died on 5 Mar 1858 in Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois

 

ii.     John was born on 19 Mar 1860 in LaSalle Co, Illinois. He died on 27 May 1863, he was 3.

 

iii.     Anna Eliza was born on 5 Aug 1862 in LaSalle Co, Illinois  On 9 Mar 1881  she married Joseph Rockwell, in LaSalle Co, Illinois.6  She died on 29 Dec 1941.

 

iv.     Mary Elizabeth 'Mamie' was born on 21 Jan 1867 in LaSalle Co, Illinois.  On 5 Apr 1890   She married James S. Nicholson, in Cook Co., Illinois.6  She died Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois on 21 Feb 1948.

  

 

10. James Heslet  was born on 9 Jan 1831 in Uniontown, Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. On 5 Jun 1865 when James was 34, he married Christiana Hart, in LaSalle Co., Illinois.  She was born  about 1843 in Canada.

 

James and Christiana were on the census for Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 23 Jun 1870; he was 39, a farmer, $4400 real estate and $1640 personal value; Christiana was 27 and keeping house. 

 

On the 1860 agricultural census he listed :152 improved, 22 acres unimproved land, $4220 value land; $50 farm implements; 7 horses, 1 cow, $1000 value livestock; 320 bushels wheat, 1200 bushels Indian corn, 331 bushels oats, 30 bushels Irish potatoes, 500 lbs butter, 35 tons hay, 6 bushels clover seed, 19 bushels grass seed; $150 value slaughtered animals.


On the 1870 agricultural census he listed: 114 acres improved land, $1400 value; $200 farm implements; $280 farm wages; 7 horses, 2 cows, 8 other cattle, 6 swine, $1350 value livestock; 90 bushels wheat, 1100 bushels corn, 300 bushels oats, 140 bushels potatoes, $20 market produce; 500 lbs butter; 25 tons hay; $350 value slaughtered animals.

 

James was on the census for Earlville, La Salle, Illinois on 30 Jun 1880, he was 49, a farmer and widower.

 

James died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 25 Aug 1895, he was 64.

 i.     Eliza was born  about 1867 in Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois

 

ii.     Mary was born  about 1869 in Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois 

 

iii.    Lydia was born in Jan 1872 in Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois.  On 20 Apr 1893 she married Fred C. Bowen, in LaSalle Co., Illinois.  He was born in Nov 1867 in LaSalle Co, Illinois.  Fred  and Lydia were on the census for Freedom Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 9 Jun 1900;  he was 32, farmer; Lydia was 29. Also listed was a son, Clayton, age 1.

 

11. Joseph Heslet was born on 29 Feb 1832 in Uniontown, Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa. On 9 Feb 1869 when Joseph was 36, he first married Lydia Jeffries, in McDonough Co., Illinois. She was born  about 1848 in Pa.

 

Joseph and Lydia were  on the census for Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 23 Jun 1870, he was 38, a farmer, $6500 in real estate and $1920 personal value; Lydia was 22. 

On the 1870 agricultural census Joseph listed: 140 acres improved, 20 unimproved, $6300 value land; $200 farm implements; $280 farm wages; 7 horses, 2 cows, 8 other cattle, 6 swine, $1350 value livestock ; 90 bushels wheat; 1100 bushels corn; 300 bushels oats; 140 bushels potatoes; $20 market produce; 500 lbs butter, 25 tons hay; $350 value slaughtered animals

 

Lydia died in Earl Twp, LaSalle Co., Illinois  about  1871

 

On 4 Sep 1872 when Joseph was 40, he second married Caroline 'Cora' Bartlett, in LaSalle Co., Illinois. She was born in 1838 in Uniontown, Dunlap Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.  Joseph died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 28 Apr 1874, he was 42.

 

Cora was on the census for Stillson St., Earlville, La Salle, Illinois on 24 Jun 1880, she was 42, widowed. Also listed was a son, William, age 7.

 

12. Mary Ann Heslet  was born on 31 Aug 1833 in Uniontown, Dunbar Twp, Fayette Co., Pa.

 

On 26 Jan 1854 when Mary Ann was 20, she first married Daniel Lynn, son of Samuel Lynn, in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois. He was born in 1824 in Brownsville, Fayette Co., Pa.  Daniel died in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois on 26 Jan 1864, he was 40.

 They had the following children:

 i.     Eliza Ann (Died as Child). Born in 1855 in LaSalle Co, Illinois. She  died on 7 Sep 1864.

 

 ii.     Samuel C. (1856-1954)

 

iii.     William Heslet (1860-1944)

 

iv.     Daniel (Died as Child).

 

On 29 Sep 1869 when Mary Ann was 36, she second married Christian Tintsman Stouffer, in Earlville, LaSalle Co., Illinois. He was born on 16 Feb 1831 in Connellsville, Fayette Co., Pa.  Mary Ann died in Arborville, York Co., Nebraska on 20 Jan 1907. Christian Tintsman died in Arborville, York Co., Nebraska on 26 Feb 1913.
