Adam Price background

ADAM PRICE

Our first Adam was born July 10, 1760, in New River settlement, Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. (1) Adam was left his father's farm at Peaked Mountain. Adam died in Rockingham County, Virginia, before June 11, 1828. Adam's will is recorded in Rockingham County, Virginia. Adam left his chidren at least 1400 acres of land in Virginia and Ohio. One indenture paper between Adam and his uncle Daniel and aunt Catherine Price shows Adam buying a tract of land in Rockingham County containing approximately 117 acres. This indenture was dated June 17, 1800.

Adam married Catherina Elizabeth Miller, daughter of Henry MILLER & Anna Elizabeth KOGER. She was born in 1766 in New River settlement, Montgomery Co, Virginia. Catherine died in Rockingham County, Virginia before January 4, 1830 (1)(2). Adam and Catharina had eleven children all of whom were born in Rockingham County, Virginia. Almost all of their children moved to either Ohio or Illinois. Four of the children (including my Adam) lived and died in Cass County, Illinois.

Children of Adam and Catherina Price:

1.1 Elizabeth (1786-1853) was born October 8, 1786, in Rockingham County, Virginia.(2)(3) On March 24, 1807, she married Jacob Heinrich Petefish in New Market, Virginia. Jacob was born May 20, 1782, in Rockingham County, Virginia. He was a farmer. About 1820 they moved to Butler County, Ohio, and later to Cass and Morgan counties, Illinois. Elizabeth and Jacob both died near Virginia, Cass County, Illinois. She died September 11, 1835, and he died November 21, 1849 (4).

Elizabeth and Jacob Petefish had eleven children:

1.1.1 William (twin) (1808-1894) was born January 15, 1808, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died May 4, 1894 in Douglas County, Kansas. He is buried at Walnut Ridge cemetery, Cass County, Illinois. He was a farmer.

1.1.2 Mary Ann (twin) (1808-) was born January 15, 1808, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died in Illinois. She married Reuben Foltz.

1.1.3 Diana "Dinah" (1810-1873) was born July 10, 1810, in Rockingham County, Virginia. She married Rev.Daniel Shore. She died June 23, 1873, in Sangamon County, Illinois..

1.1.4 Elizabeth (1814-1837) was born August 4, 1814. She was Levi Conover's first wife. They married November 8, 1836, in Morgan County, Illinois. She died Augst 31, 1837, in Cass County, Illinois at the birth of her first child (the child died also). Levi later married Phebe Rosenberger.

1.1.5 Sarah Jane (1816-1902) was born November 9, 1816 in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died February 2, 1902, in Palmyra, Illinois. She married Robert H. Maxfield on December 17, 1837, in Cass County, Illinois. Robert was born March 10, 1810, in Boone County, Kentucky and died June 17, 1876, in Greene County, Illinois. 1.1.6 Ellen (1819-1848) was born May 9, 1819, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died August 7, 1848, in Macoupin County, Illinois. She was married in Morgan County, Illinois, to Joseph Crum on March 15, 1838.

1.1.7 Jacob (1822-1902) was born January 7, 1822, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died April 19, 1902, in Cass County, Illinois. In May 1855 he married Nancy C. Strickler. Jacob was a farmer. Jacob's biographical sketch

1.1.8 Samuel H. (1824-1902) was born April 30, 1824, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died October 4, 1902, in Cass County, Illinois. He married Nancy Maria Hudson in Cass County on March 18, 1848. He was a banker and they later moved to Columbia, Missouri. Samuel's biographical sketch

1.1.9 John A. (1827-1880) was born January 9, 1827, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died May 24, 1880, in Cass County, Illinois. He married Elmira Eador February 20, 1851, in Cass County, Illinois. She was born in 1828 and died December 27, 1911.

1.1.10 Andrew Jackson (1829-1863) was born September 23, 1829, in Virginia. He married Parthenia McClure in Cass County, Illinois on September 28, 1858. During the Civil War he was wounded and died on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. Parthenia married Joseph C. McBeth in 1884.

1.1.11 Thomas Benton (1833-1901) was born August 7, 1833, in Virginia, and died October 7, 1901, in Meade, Kansas. He married Clarinda Ada Parkinson in Sangamon County, Illinois, on June 22, 1859. He was a farmer and moved to Douglas County, Kansas.

1.2 William (1788-1858) was born November 15, 1788, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died January 14, 1858, in Butler County, Ohio. He is buried in Withrow cemetery in that county. He was married to Anna Graft in Butler County in 1828. She was born in Bardstown, Kansas, on December 23, 1802. William and Anna had five children. Their son George was killed in the Civil War.

1.2.1 Mary (1831-1832) was born January 19, 1831, in Butler County, Ohio, and died December 23, 1832, in the same county.

1.2.2 Abraham (1832-1913) was born May 23, 1832, in Butler County, Ohio, and died December 22, 1913, in Darke County, Ohio. He married Anna Catherine Baird. Abraham and Anna Price had three children.

1.2.3 Adam (1836-1911) was born September 23, 1836, in Butler County, Ohio, and died November 10, 1911, in Eaton, Preble County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Phares and had one son, Melvin. He later married Elizabeth E. Bailor.

1.2.4 Samuel (1838-1872) was born December 3, 1838, in Butler County, Ohio, and died March 9, 1872, in that same county. He married Kate Klingen Smith in Carlisle, Ohio.

1.2.5 George (1842-1863) was born May 27, 1842, in Butler County, Ohio. He never married and died at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, on June 18, 1863.

1.3 Henry (1792-1875) was born November 9, 1792, in Rockingham County, Virginia.(5) and died March 20, 1875, in Warren County, Ohio. He is buried at Mt Gilead Cemetery in Macon County, Illinois. According to his son Thomas M.'s biographical sketch, Henry lived for about twenty years in Ohio; moved to Cass County, Illinois, in the spring of 1834; and moved to Macon County, Illinois, in the fall of 1854. He married Mary Ann Mallow on April 24, 1817, in Warren County, Ohio.She was born June 26, 1797, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died October 1865 in Macon County, Illinois. They are both buried at Mt Gilead Cemetery in Macon County, Illinois. Henry and Mary Ann Price had ten children.

1.3.1 Albert (1818-) was born February 14, 1818, and died as a child in Ohio.

1.3.2 Catherine Anna (1819-1851) was born January 31, 1819, in Ohio, and died in Cass County, Illinois February 9, 1851. She married William Pitner November 2, 1841, in Morgan County, Illinois. William was born about 1805 in Tennessee. He was a teacher, sheriff, and justice of the peace. William died March 22, 1875. Catherine and William Pitner had two children: Nancy and Thomas J. (biographical sketch).

1.3.3 Elizabeth (1821-1895) was born June 17, 1821, in Ohio, and died March 16, 1895, in Decatur, Illinois. She married William J. Wilson in Macon County, Illinois, on March 6, 1862.

1.3.4 Delilah (1823-) was born August 17, 1823, in Illinois. She married Aaron Henderson on January 5, 1848, in Cass County, Illinois. Aaron was born in Illinois in 1826. Delilah and Aaron Henderson had two children.

1.3.5 Moses Crum (1823-1901) was born September 18, 1823, and died in February 1901. Moses was married three times. He married first Sarah C. Yaples on December 19, 1849, in Cass County, Illinois. She was born iin 1829 and died September 3, 1850. In December 1852 Moses married Sarah Short. Moses lastly married Maria Hardcastle. He was a farmer and was living in Kansas in 1895. Moses had five children.

1.3.6 Sarah (1826-) was born June 17, 1826, in Ohio, and died in Cass County, Illinois. She married John Yaples in Cass County, Illinois, on December 6, 1853.

1.3.7 Thomas Miller (1831-1904) was born February 28, 1831, in Butler County, Ohio. He died October 23, 1904, in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. He moved to Macon County in 1854. He married Triphenia Cox there on September 1, 1859. She died February 24, 1862. Thomas and Triphenia had one daughter, Ida. Thomas married again in 1867 to Mary Catherine Dougherty Muir (widow of George Muir). She was born in Wisconsin in 1840 and died January 5, 1904 in Macon County, Illinois. Thomas and Mary and five children.

1.3.8 Adam C. (1833-1839) was born December 24, 1833, and died March 1, 1839, in Cass County, Illinois.

1.3.9 Mary Ellen (1836-1863) was born October 1, 1836, in Illinois and died December 22, 1863, in Mt. Zion township. She married Christopher Skillman on December 16, 1858, in Macon County, Illinois.

1.3.10 George Henry (1841-) was born June 7, 1841, in Illinois. He married first Elizabeth Davidson on December 22, 1863, in Macon County, Illinois. They had a daughter Minerva. He later married Lille Foltz. George was a farmer and was living in Kansas in 1895.

1.4 Anna Mary (1794-) was born 1794 and was still living at the time of her father's death in 1828. She married Isaac Spitler (1).

1.5 Anna Catherine "Katy" (1791-1849) was born August 8, 1791, and christened October 12, 1791, at Peaked Mt. church in Rockingham County, Virginia. She died April 13, 1849, in Cass County, Illinois. She married George W. Powell who was born in Virginia in 1791. He died September 15, 1857. George was a farmer. They are both buried in Geo. Bristow Cemetery, Cass County, Illinois (5). They had no children.

1.6 John (1799-1849) was born in May 1799 in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died August 14, 1849 in Butler County, Ohio. He married Elizabeth "Betsy" Rhinehart in Rockingham County, Virginia, on August 8, 1822 (1). John and Betsy Price had eleven children. Read about the removal and relocation of John's ashes.

1.6.1 Henry Washington (1823-1903) was born April 23, 1823, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died October 24, 1903, in Carroll County, Indiana. He married first Mary Marlow and then Elizabeth Ann Zinn. Henry had seven children.

1.6.2 Nancy Jane (1825-) was born in 1825 in Rockingham County, Virginia, and never married.

1.6.3 Barbara Ann (1826-1904) was born December 17, 1826, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died December 29, 1904, in Decatur, Macon County, Illinois. She married Levi Neyhardt in Macon County and they had two sons.

1.6.4 Benjamin Franklin (1829-1904) was born January 20, 1829, in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died September 25, 1904, in Macon County, Illinois. He married Lovina Donner and later married Juliett Lusk. Ben and Lovina had seven children.

1.6.5 Margaret P. (1831-1917) was born December 7, 1831, at Seven Mile, Butler County, Ohio. She died October 20, 1917, in Macon County, Illinois. She married David Foster in Macon County in 1860.

1.6.6 Jacob Rhinehart (1834-1920) was born March 28, 1834, at Seven Mile, Butler County, Ohio. In 1857 he moved to Decatur, Illinois., He married Amy D. Hyatt in 1859, in Butler County. Jacob and Amy had three children. Jacob's 60th wedding anniversary.

1.6.7 William Henry (1837-1913) was born August 14, 1837, in Butler County, Ohio, and died October 14, 1913, in Macon County, Illinois. He married Nancy Minerva Bell in Macon County in October 1861.

1.6.8 Sarah Elizabeth (1841-1912) was born August 2, 1841, in Butler County, Ohio, and died January 26, 1912, in Macon County, Illinois. She married Rev. Nathan Martin Baker September 1, 1865. Sarah and Nathan Baker had four children. Nathan Baker's biographical sketch..

1.6.9 Mary Ellen (1844-1930) was born March 31, 1844, in Butler County, Ohio, and died June 24, 1930, in Charleston, Illinois. She married Allen E. Hopkins who was a merchant and they had four children.

1.6.10 Fernandez "Fo" (1848-) was born in 1848 at Seven Mile, Butler County, Ohio.

1.6.11 John Albert was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, and died as a young child (before 1850).

1.7 Susan (1801-1833) was born June 14, 1801, in Virginia. She is buried at Mt. Zion, Macon County, Illinois. She married Hugh Powell on November 4, 1833 (1).Hugh was born September 21, 1798, in Virginia. He died April 24, 1859, in Cass County, Illinois, and is buried at Geo. Bristow cemetery in that county (6). Susan and Hugh Powell had eight children.

1.7.1 Mary Catherine (1834-1847) was born in 1834 and died August 3, 1847. She is buried at Geo. Bristow cemetery, in Virginia township, Cass County, Illinois.

1.7.2 Robert Fulton (1836-) was born in Illinois.

1.7.3 Cynthia Ann (1837-) was born in Illinois in 1837. She married S. King Smith on February 12, 1880, in Macon County, Illinois.

1.7.4 William Lorton (1839-) was born in Illinois.

1.7.5 James Adam (1841-) was born in Illinois.

1.7.6 Hugh Franklin (1843-1858) was born in Illinois, and died February 1, 1858. He is buried at Geo. Bristow cemetery, Cass County, Illinois.

1.7.7 Susan Frances (1845-1845) was born the 14 of September and died the 15 of October 1845.

1.7.8 Miranda Elizabeth (1846-1868) was born in Illinois. She married John A. Rhineberger on April 30, 1862, in Cass County, Illinois. In February 1866 she married Levi M. Dick in Macon County, Illinois. She died August 2, 1868 and is buried in Dick cemetery in Cass County. Miranda and Levi Dick had two children (possibly three) who are buried at Dick cemetery in Cass County, Illinois.

1.8 *Adam Clark (1803-1875) married Susan Rosenberger.

1.9 George never married and died before February 1830.

1.10 Jacob (1808-1880) was born Septenber 19, 1808 in Virginia.(1) He died January 15, 1880, in New Market, Virginia. He married Ellen/ Eleanor Rosenberger March 25, 1834, in Rockingham County, Virginia. I assume she is related to Adam Clark's wife Susan though I don't know how yet. Jacob and Ellen Price had four children:

1.10.1 Berryman Zirkle (1837-1903) was born May 5, 1837 in Virginia and died November 24, 1903, in New Market, Virginia. His first wife was Betty Brubaker and his second wife was Martha Keyser.

1.10.4 Mary Eleanor married Dr. Charles J. Smith who became president of Roanoke College.

1.11 Sarah "Sally" married John Jacob Burner. She died after 1828. Sally and John Burner had two children.
