Elizabeth (Eliza) Bennett

  The Story:

According to family tradition Eliza's grandmother was Lady Nancy [Brown?], a red headed woman. She married the village blacksmith's son. Her family disowned her. They had a son who was a curate in the Anglican Church. He left for Canada in 1809 [probable mistake in date]. He and his wife and some of the children died of Diphtheria on board ship.

Just two daughters survived. Eliza [aged 16] and Mary Ann. Eliza and probably her sister sat with their belongings and baggage three nights and days on the gangway.

Then some people asked her to come and work for them, then later on her sister Mary Ann was taken off the ship and some people travelling down into the USA took her with them so the sister never saw each other again. Extracted from a story by Maude Collens

Another story was that Eliza was the a seamstress in the Chance household and that she and John escaped to Canada.

Eliza was a member of the Old St. Paul's church in Woodstock, Ontario. Her picture was published in "Old St. Paul's History 1834-1974."

Elizabeth married Coporal John Chance. (Coporal John Chance was born in Oct 1808 in , , , England,^{2 3} died on 23 Jun 1882 in Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada ^{2 4} and was buried on 25 Jun 1882 in Anglican Cemetery, Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario.)
