We are currently researching the Van Ness family of Alabama and Ohio
I am looking for information about the parents of George Henry Clay Van Ness(Henry Van Ness), b1839 Florence, AL. We have collected quite a bit of information on Henry from his Civil War service records(Roddy's Cavalry, Tishomingo County, MS) and his residence in Cincinnati after the war. However we have limited information about his parents. Only his mother, Mary Ann (Evans) Van Ness is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census with him. 1840 Franklin County, AL census: Ann Vanniss - 2 males under 5, one female 20-30 1850 Lauderdale County, AL census: Venness, Mary 36 KY Seamstress George 11 AL The 1880 census for Hamilton County, Ohio lists Henry Van Ness with his mother's birthpace as AL, which conflicts with the 1850 census. Mary Ann died about 1854, but we do not know where(assuming Florence,AL or surrounding counties). According to family letters, his father,Peter Van Ness, was born in Holland, immigrated to NY and then moved to Alabama. The 1880 census for George henry Clay Van Ness shows his father was born in Holland. His father, according to family letters,is believed to be Peter Van Ness, who was born in , seems to have left no traces in the area. We have been looking in NW Alabama, NE Mississippi, and Southern Tennesse and have found no Van Ness. We are not sure if he died or they divorced and he moved away. One possibility lies in a family letter, that says that around the time of Henry's death(d.1890), some lawyers visited his wife claiming to be from New York and they said that the family was owed some money. Since she did not have the money to have a lawyer look into it, nothing became of it. The 1880 census for Hamilton County, Ohio lists Henry Van Ness with his father's birthpace as "Holland".
