a Farmer in Lacon, IL. He served in the military from August 22,
1862 to July 14, 1865. Union Army; Civil War. 11th Illinois Volunteer
Infantry Regiment, Company I. Left Vermont to fight. When he came back home,
it was time for a farmer's son to fight. The farmer paid him with a white horse
to take his son's place. He went back and believed to have ended up a Captain.
As a private, participated in the battles of Forts Henry and Donelson, Cassville,
and Lake Providence. Went with Gen. Grant's forces on their movement southward
and was 47 days in the siege of Vicksburg. Was promoted to corporal in June
1863, and was wounded in the leg at Black River, confining him to the hospital
for a month. Was promoted to seargent in September 1864. In 1865 he went to
Spanish Fort, Alabama; and upon its surrender he went to Mobile, assisting in
the removal of the injured when the arsenal exploded. After being promoted to
first seargeant in May 1865, he went to Baton Rouge, then to Alexandria where
they received the surrender and arms of the noted generals Sterling Price and
Kirby Smith. The army lists him being mustered out on July 14, 1865 in Baton
Rouge, LA; and his obituary and family lore has him discharged in September 1865.
Received a picture and/or button of President Abraham Lincoln from him; his
granddaughter Molly gave it to the Smithsonian Institute. Member of the Grand
Army of the Republic Post #74 in Oconto in the 1880's until his death. Often
lead Memorial Day parades acting as marshall of the day in Oconto on his horse.
Between September 1865 and 1868 he was a Farmer in Canada. He lived
in Fond du Lac, WI between 1868 and 1870. He lived in Oconto, WI
after April 1870. After 1871 he was a Carpenter in Oconto, WI.
Remodeled the Turner Opera House into the knitting factory and rebuilt the courthouse
