Brandon, Manitoba, for basic training, finished in Edmonton, Alberta, where
he graduated as a wireless air gunner. Survived three plane crashes, which kept
him in hospital for almost half of the 14 months he was on operations. With #418
Squadron flying Boston aircraft as a rear gunner . Badly shot up during a raid,
his plane crashed in flames. His flying suit ablaze, he survived after being
badly injured and suffering shock, a slight concussion, a fractured leg , facial
burns and multiple bruises. Although the rest of the crew perished, he somehow
got clear and was able to inflate his raft and get aboard before lapsing into
unconsciousness. Laid unconscious in his life raft for hours before being sighted
by a search and rescue Sunderland aircraft. Was picked up by this amphibious
plane and rushed to the hospital. Spent five months in three different hospitals,
the last being an all-Canadian one. The burns he suffered required extensive
grafting and an exploding bullet left him lame. Earlier he and other crewmembers
were rescued after being marooned on an island off the coast for days. Another
time he injured his back and was hospitalized when his plane crashed on landing.
A doctor at the hospital said that "he had come through enough to kill any
average man.". Walking with a cane he was still allowed to return to duty.
He was posted to #278 Squadron. He died on April 4, 1943 in England, U.K. of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland.2118,2119 In April 1943 the crew of
Anson aircraft #DG809 were engaged in air sea rescue operations when it was shot
down forty miles southeast of Yarmouth, England. Four of the crew were also
reported missing and presumed dead. He was buried. His name is inscribed
on the Runnymede War Memorial, Englesfield Green, Egham, Surrey, England. Parents:

Reverend Daniel Leo FORESTELL was born on July 15, 1890 in Springbrook, Hastings, ON, Canada.1164 He was educated at Campbellford High School between 1905 and 1909 in Campbellford, Seymour, ON, Canada. Raised in St Mary of the Visitation Parish, Campbellford, Diocese of Peterborough, and attended Campbellford High School, 1915-1909. He graduated in 1913 in St. Michael's College, Toronto, ON, Canada. He was educated at Ontario College of Theology at St Basil's Seminary between 1913 and 1917 in Toronto, ON, Canada. The work of the Seminary was transferred to Assumption College, Windsor, in 1917. He was ordained on December 21, 1918 in St. Peter's Cathedral, London, ON, Canada.2120 Basilian Order. After ordination Father Forestell was appointed to the staff of Assumption college. While there he began graduate summer courses at the University of Chicago, but a change to parish work did not allow him to continue to an advanced degree. In 1922, after two years as an assistant at Assumption Parish, he was made pastor of St John the Baptist Parish, Amherstburg. His two assistants were Fathers Alfred Cote and Thomas Heydon. When a black smallpox epidemic struck the district he did not permit them to attend those stricken with this contagious disease, reserving this duty to himself. Father E.J. McCorkell recalled this during a recent visit at Providence Villa Hospital, but Father Forestell shrugged it off with a remark that only a dozen parishioners contracted the disease. In 1925 Father Forestell was transferred to St Basil's Parish, Toronto, and in 1928 he received his third appointment as a pastor, this time to Holy Rosary Parish, Toronto. In 1930 he was a Principal in Toronto, ON, Canada. St. Michael's College School. In 1931 he was a Superior and Principal in Detroit, MI. Catholic Central High School. He lived in Detroit, MI in 1932. Between 1942 and 1962 he was a Priest. Pastor of St Basil's Parish. During this second term as pastor here he redecorated the church and installed the present marble altars. In 1947 he was transferred to St Anne's Parish, Houston, for a one year term as pastor. Then he returned to the ranks as an assistant at Assumption Parish, 1948-54; St John the Baptist Parish, 1954-55; Holy Rosary Parish, 1955-58. He went to St John the Baptist Parish as pastor for one year in 1958-59. His last parochial appointment was at St Basil's Parish, 1959-62. In this year he retired to St Basil's Seminary, no longer able to assume regular duties. Writing the Golden Jubilee History of the Basilian Fathers in St John the Baptist Parish, Amherstburg, 1878-1928, Father Vincent Donnelly described Father Daniel Forestell as, "Jovial, sympathetic, courageous, zealous". Infirmities curtailed his zeal during the last years. As the result of diabetes, the toes of one foot were amputated. Later the first of a series of strokes affected his speech and left him with limited mobility. Nevertheless he continued to do what work he could. His abiding interest in the young members of the Congregation caused him to insist on going to the Erindale Novitiate to carry out his duty as extraordinary confessor at the Ember Days of Lent in 1965. On the golden jubilee of his profession he assisted at a Mass offered by his classmate, Father Basil Sullivan. He said Mass for the last time in early December with the assistance of Deacon George Freemesser. The three out-buildings are also in good repair. It was reported that when James was away, Matilda would frequently shoot a gun to frighten away the wolves. James died at the age of 56. John, the eldest, was 30 years old, and Joseph, the youngest, was 7 years. Their children: John - had a farm near Stirling. He later settled near Marysville. Margaret - married John Foley and lived on a farm near Madoc. Samuel - had a farm near Springbrook. He was killed when his horses bolted on Sep 9, 1910. Tobias - never married. He lived with his mother near Madoc until her death, then lived with his brother Adam, just outside Madoc. James - learned blacksmith and carriage making in Tweed. When Terry came to St. Michael's his uncle, Fr. Daniel L. Forestell, C.S.B., was pastor of St. Basil's. Fr. Forestell went to Rome in the fall of 1952. He obtained his Licence in theology from the Angelicum in preparation for entry into the Biblical Institute. In 1955 he earned his Licence in Sacred Scripture from the Biblicum and then spent a year of advanced study at the École Biblique in Jerusalem. He began teaching Sacred Scripture at St. Basil's Seminary in 1956. When his younger colleague, Fr. William H. Irwin, C.S.B., whom his teaching had inspired to pursue biblical studies, came back from Rome and Jerusalem in 1965, Fr. Forestell returned to Jerusalem to begin work on his doctoral dissertation. The impending war between Israel and its neighbors forced him to interrupt his stay at the École Biblique in 1967. After recovering from serious illness contracted during an earlier enforced cholera quarantine in a border camp after a trip to Iraq, he continued his research and writing at the Harvard Divinity School and successfully defended his thesis before the Pontifical Biblical Commission in May of 1970. He was awarded the doctorate in 1974 upon publication of his dissertation under the title The Word of the Cross, a study of the theology of salvation in the Gospel according to St. John. Though he began by teaching courses in both Testaments, he would eventually specialize in New Testament as the St. Michael's Faculty of Theology would be incorporated into the Toronto School of Theology in 1970. He also served as novice master from 1971 to 1973. In the spring of 1981 he was awarded an honourary Doctor of Humanities degree by St. Michael's College, Winooski, Vermont, in acknowledgment of the excellence of his teaching by the Edmundites whom he had taught in Toronto. For reasons of health he had to withdraw from active work at the Faculty of Theology in the fall of 1984. After time in hospital and a year at the Newman Center of Stanford University, he joined the staff of St. Joseph's College, teaching New Testament courses for credit to undergraduates of the University of Alberta. Renewed health concerns forced his retirement from teaching in 1989, but he stayed with the Basilian community at St. Joseph's until June 1994. Living at Orsini House he continued his writing and pastoral work. In the course of his teaching career he published a pamphlet on Proverbs and three books (The Word of the Cross [1974]; Targumic Traditions and the New Testament [1979]; As Ministers of Christ [1992]), collaborating also on aids to preaching the Lectionary.
