Between 1892 and 1900 he was a Carpenter in Haverhill, MA. He was also known as Alexander Hisoire before November 7, 1892. Legally changed on November 7, 1892, in Salem, MA. He was ill with Measles in April 1898. He served in the military from May 5, 1898 to April 28, 1899. US Army; Spanish-American War. Private; Eighth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Company F. Two months in, detached from his company and appointed as Assistant Wagon Master after July 15, 1898, commonly called a "Muleskinner," or men who drove the mules, outsmarting them, i.e. "skinning" them. The regiment, of which the company was a part, consisted of 47 officers and 896 enlisted men. The unit would grow to include 59 officers and 1,358 men. Subsequent to its being mustered in, the unit was sent to Chattanooga, Tennessee, later serving at Camp Thomas, Chickamauga, Georgia. The camp grew into a city of about 30,000 men, becoming quite unhealthy since it lacked in sanitation, adequate water and supplies. While the unit was at Chickamauga, an armistice was declared between the United States and Spain, ending the actual fighting on August 12, 1898. With Camp Thomas becoming more unhealthy, the units serving there were shifted to other locations. The Eighth Massachusetts was shifted to Lexington, Kentucky, where the company was at Camp Hamilton by late October 1898 when Private Brown requested and received a ten day furlough to his home in Haverhill "to attend to some important private business," ending with him rejoining his company. The unit was apparently still in this camp when the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. On January 7, 1899, the 8th Massachusetts began its service abroad, steaming for Cuba. It arrived three days later. In Cuba, it served as part of the occupation force on the island. The unit would continue in this role until April 4, 1899, when it began its trip home to the U.S., arriving on April 9, 1899. Absent with leave after April 20, 1899, Assistant Wagon Master Brown and the 8th Massachusetts were mustered out of service in Boston on April 28, 1899. During its term of service, the regiment lost one officer and thirty men to disease. Additionally, fifteen men deserted and fifty-four were discharged on disability. http://www.spanamwar.com/8thmasscok.htm. A few months after he was discharged, his nephew Alexander Hisoire was named after him. He lived in Haverhill, MA between 1898 and 1900. He lived on Main St. in Haverhill, MA between 1900 and 1910. Rented in 1900, owned in 1910. In 1910 he was a Cabinet Carpenter in Haverhill, MA. About 1912 he was a Master Carpenter in Hampton Beach, NH. Built many of the places at the beach including the Colonial Inn at 139 Ocean Blvd. After 1914 he was a Firefighter in Hampton Beach, NH. Between 1916 and March 1924 he was a Fire Chief in Hampton Beach, NH. After a serious fire which occurred in September 1915, the local fire department was not equipped to handle major fires. So in the Spring of 1916, a reorganization was made, and the commissioners appointed him as the first permanent chief. They also ordered the first motorized apparatus for the department. Chief Brown's era consisted of many new ideas toward fire protection. He installed the first telegraph box system from Gamewell during 1917. He directed operations for the first fire house which was built in 1922, and put into service an Aherns-Fox pump and ladder combination. Mentioned at the annual Town Meeting held February 16, 1923. "To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate money to hire 4 men, A.H. Brown as Chief at $35. and three others at $25. per week, for the maintainance of Fire Dept. - at the beach." In the month of March 1924, Chief Brown resigned his office after having been with the department for over 9 years of active service. http://www.hampton.lib.nh.us/hampton/history/firedept/fire13.htm.
