King Pépin I LE BREF of the Franks was born in 714.110 Before 741 he was a Mayor of Neustria. Between 741 and 751 he was a Mayor of the Merovingian Palace in Neustria and Burgundy. From his father Mayor of the Palace Charles Martel's death, when he and his brother Carolman began to reign jointly but not without strong opposition, for Griffon, the son of Charles Martel and the Bavarian Sonnichilde, demanded a share in the government. Moreover, the Duke of the Aquitanians and the Duke of the Alamannians thought this a favourable opportunity to throw off the Frankish supremacy. The young kings were repeatedly involved in war, but all their opponents, including the Bavarians and Saxons, were defeated and the unity of the kingdom re-established. As early as 741 Carloman had entered upon his epoch-making relations with St. Boniface, to whom was now opened a new field of labour, the reformation of the Frankish Church. On 21 April, 742, Boniface was present at a Frankish synod presided over by Carloman at which important reforms were decreed. As in the Frankish realm the unity of the kingdom was essentially connected with the person of the king, Carloman to secure this unity raised the Merovingian Childeric to the throne (743). In 747 he resolved to enter a monastery. The danger, which up to this time had threatened the unity of the kingdom from the division of power between the two brothers, was removed, and at the same time the way was prepared for the deposing of the last Merovingian and for the crowning of Pepin. The latter put down the renewed revolt led by his half-brother Griffon, and succeeded in completely restoring the boundaries of the kingdom. Between 751 and 768 he was a King of the Franks. Ignoring King Dagobert II's nephew Childeric III, the only Merovingian of any notable authority, Rome grasped the opportunity to unprecidently create Pepin king. He was crowned king of the Franks with the help of Pope Zacharias and Frankish nobles and bishops at Soissons, in place of the last Merovingian king; breaking the pledge of allegience of Rome in 496 to King Clovis. From this point forward, kings were endorsed and crowned only by Rome's self-styled perogative. The deposed King Childeric was publicly humiliated, assaulted, and incarcerated where he died within four years. In 754, Pope Stephen II visited Gaul and confered on him the title of patrician. Reversed his father Charles Martel's Italian non-agression policy and marched against the Lombards, defeating them in 754 and again in 756, forcing them to cede the exarchate of Ravenna and the Pentapolis; making this donation of lands which established the Papal States and began the temperal power of the papacy. Incorperated Septimania, and subdued Aquitaine. At his death he had extended the Frankish kingdom to the whole of Gaul. He preserved the empire created by Clovis from the destruction that menaced it; he was able to overcome the great danger arising from social conditions that threatened the Frankish kingdom, by opposing to the unruly lay nobility the ecclesiastical aristocracy that had been strengthened by the general reform. When he died the means had been created by which his greater son could solve the problems of the empire. Pepin's policy marked out the tasks to which Charlemagne devoted himself: quieting the Saxons, the subjection of the duchies and lastly, the regulation of the ecclesiastical question and with it that of Italy. He died on September 25, 768 in St-Denis, Paris, Kingdom of the Franks.155 He was buried in St-Denis, Paris, Kingdom of the Franks. He has Ancestral File Number 1547973394496. Martin LE ROY was born in 1384.124 Before 1416 he was a Maitre d'Hôtel. For John of France, Duke of Berry (1340-1416). Unlike his brothers Charles V, Louis of Anjou, and Philip the Bold, John of France, duke of Berry, the third son of John the Good and Bona of Luxemburg, never played a major role in the political history of the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, although his elder brother and his nephew Charles VI often entrusted him with important governmental duties. This great lord, refined and fond of luxury, like all the princes of the Valois line, seemed to have no more consuming passion than the embellishment of his various residences, especially the hôtel de Nesles in Paris and the château of Mehun-sur-Yèvre in Berry, which he filled, as Charles V had done at the Louvre and Vincennes, with the most fabulous art collections of the age. Three detailed inventories drawn up between 1403 and John's death in 1416, give some idea of these incredibly rich collections, which included tapestries, reliquaries wrought of silver, gold, and ivory, fabulous gems, and precious manuscripts. The duke's last days were shrouded in grief after the French defeat at Agincourt. He died on April 1, 1453.124 He has Ancestral File Number 1775360.
