In September 1667, 12-year-old Benoni and two good friends, James Bennett, 15 years old, and Godfrey Nims, about 13, decided to run away and join the French in Canada. This youthful caper is related in court records, dated September 24, 1667, in Springfield, Massachusetts. The three boys broke into the home of Robert Bartlett, two Sundays in a row, while Bartlett's family was at church, and stole 24 shillings in silver, and 7 shillings in wampum, which they gave to an Indian, Quequalatt, to pay him to guide them to the French. His father paid the fine. The Indian who helpe d in this plot was arrested the next year, and sentenced to 20 lashes, and to restore the money and goods he had received from the boys. King Phillip's War. Served under Captain Lathrop and was the only known unwounded survivor of the Bloody Brook Massacre on September 18, 1675, when the indians ambushed most of the male inhabitants at nearby Bloody Brook and massacred all but three men who escaped to seek help. When soldiers from nearby Hadley arrived the next day to help Captain Lothrup's detail, they were all dead but one man, and he was badly wounded. He was Captain John Stebbins, and is known in history as the sole survivor of the Bloody Brook massacre. The second day after the massacre he enlisted under Capt. The townspeople erected a palisade of logs, erected on end to cover the entire area of about twenty acres . During Queen Anne's war, a party of 200 French and 142 Caughnawaga and Abenaki Indians commanded by Jean Baptiste Hertel de Rouville attacked Deerfield during bitter cold and deep snows. On February 29, 1704, deep snowdrifts against the palisades allowed the attackers to scale the walls and surprise the garrison. Fierce fighting ensued, and with 111 prisoners, amongst were John Stebbins, his wife and six children. This was the Deerfield Massacre. The house of John Stebbins, Jr. was burned down, he his wife and his five children, along with Abigail, his married daughter and her husband, Jacques de Noyen, were captured and taken to Canada. Although other families suffered severely from the Indian attack, the Stebbins family was not molested and went to Canada with the French and Indian party, partly as captives, partly as relatives of Jacques deNoyon. In the attack 49 persons were killed and about 109 made prisoners. There were 133 survivors left in Deerfield, some wounded. The French Captain de Rouville marched his party through the deep snows to Lake Champlain, then over the ice to Canada. The suffering was intense during this cold march and many prisoners died or were killed by the Indians if they slowed up. Eventually small parties of Indians left the group with captives they selected, and the remainder brought to places like Chambly and Sorel by the French. The Stebbins family was separated. He lived in Canada after February 29, 1704. Was captured by the Indians and taken to Canada. The captors and captives camped the first night about ten miles from Deerfield, deep snow making an attack on them unrealistic without snowshoes. They traveled northward to Canada in deep snow by the Connecticut Valley, the White and Winooski Rivers to Lake Champlain and then the Richelieu River. Enroute two prisoners made their escape, but 20 were killed. Of the remaining 87, fifty were redeemed before 1731. Most of the prisoners went with the Mohawks to Sault Saint-Louis (Caughnawaga) or with the Abenakis to Saint-Francois-du-Lac. The Stebbins were allowed to go to Boucherville after a short period in Chambly likely under the charge of Hertel. John Stebbins, Jr., his wife Dorothy and their oldest son John III were later redeemed and returned to New England. The other children all remained in Canada. He died on December 19, 1724 in Deerfield, Franklin, Massachusetts Bay Colony.310 He has Ancestral File Number A704. He was a Carpenter. In 1667, it is reported that in Northampton, MA, 20-year-old John Stebbins, Jr. had been sentenced to ten lashes, or a forthy-shilling fine (John Stebbins, Sr. paid fine) for complicity in a burglary/runaway attempt by three local youths while towns people were in church.
