A librarian in Montreal stated that the government gave away land in Abitibi County in the depression the 1930s to people in the cities if they could clear and work the land in hopes of raising their low standards of living. They were trained north, and this is how Amos grew. Stories of subject suggest that given his way of life, he may have entered this program. An Alfred Belanger of unknown origins died and was buried in Amos. He lived in 1937. Son Teddy Belanger stated that he was "deceased" on his marriage license, apparently regarded as good as such, as he had been estranged since Teddy was about 7.
