Alfred living at Putteridge Park, Offley at time of marriage. Sarah

Alfred CHERRY was born on 14 Jan 1885 in Round Green, Luton, Beds, England.135 He appeared in the census in 1891 in St. Thomas Parish/District, Stopsley, Luton, Bedford, England.136 He appeared in the census in 1901 in Stopsley, Luton, Bedfordshire, England.137 He immigrated about 1910 to America.138 He immigrated about 1920 to America.139 He appeared in the census in 1920 in Seattle, King, Washington.140 He died on 28 May 1960 in Walla Walla, Walla Walla, Washington.141 He was buried on 1 Jun 1960 in Milton-Freewater, Umatilla, Oregon.142 He Lived in 1960 in Milton-Freewater, Umatilla, Oregon on five acres of his own before his death. Alfred Cherry was born 1885 in Round Green, Bedfordshire, England.
Round Green was a small place, with just a few shops and houses
lining the road which would have been built for the workers of Luton.
Luton was famous for its Straw Hats and many people were employed in
the "hat trade". I understand it is part of Luton now.

Sixteen years later he was found in the 1901 census and working
as a Hair Dresser Apprentice. He was good at cutting hair and usually
cut ours, my brothers and I.

Last known address in England was at 152 Hart Lane, Luton Beds.
Or rather, this was the residence of his sister Maud. This was in a
letter to him, dated 5/12/32, address of 32 Park Rd., Stopsley, Luton,
Beds., England from her, wherein she refers to herself as Sis which
has been proven to be correct, as per the 1901 census and her marriage
certificate.

He came to the United States by way of Alaska or the Yukon area
of Canada. How he got here is a story in itself and not fully
determined but it is known he left or 'jumped' ship at Cape Horn in
South America (another story) and worked his way up through the
Americas till he reached Alaska. It's not known how he accomplished
this journey but it would stretch the imagination to believe he made
his way on foot or horse back. He was only about sixteen yrs old at
the time. In Alaska he 'sealed' for furs, which he sent some back to
his mother in England, and did some gold mining/prospecting which we
have some <a href="../upnorth"
target="_self">&nbsp;upnorth&nbsp;</a>pictures to show for it. His
search for riches was never really attained, being too late for the
gold rush, but instead gained a rich knowledge of survival in a
wilderness that to most of us would find intimidating. With three
other friends he trekked through miles of snow and ice, bringing some
pictures home with him that is the only proof of his ever being 'up
north'.

He shows up on the 1920 US census in Seattle as a border with an
occupation of Corker in a Shipyard and shows he immigrated to the US
in 1890 which cannot be right. He was known to leave home at an early
age so it is probable he left around 1901. I have his certificate of
membership for the Odd Fellows dated Oct. 1st, 1913, of Seattle and
two more for the year 1918 and one for 1922. So we know he was in and
around the town of Seattle for at least nine years. How and the method
he used to arrive in Seattle I haven't been able to find but I can
surmise he came by boat as that would have been the most common mode
of travel in that part of North America at that time. I remember him
saying something about sails and sailing. This leaves a gap of
knowledge of his whereabouts and doings of about ten years that we can
only wonder about.

That first bit of evidence of his being in Seattle, his IOOF
Initiation certificate of October 1913, would indicate his age as 28,
The two dated Jan. 1st, 1918 and June 1st 1918 and one dated 4 May,
1922 and signed, by the Recording Secretary, Henry C. Pehling, (Who
still secretary, also signed Alfred's certificates later in 1957 through
1960!) prove he was there for at least those years. Could the gaps
between these dates be when he was off to Alaska? We know he went
sealing for furs and then gold prospecting, but not when. And what of
the years between 1900 and 1913?

<blockquote>There is a known family remembrance, (thanks to cousin
Betty Thompson of NZ) of Alfred sending some furs back to England to
his mother to make a fur coat that was for, in it's day very valuable
and then later sending a gold nugget, big enough to make a ring for
Sidney, his brother also of NZ. Sidney is the grandfather of <a
href="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cherrytree/cherrytree/c
herry/d_1.html#350" target="_self">Betty</a>. A photo was sent to me
by Roger Thompson, Betty's son, of the ring and it is by far the most
remarkable photo now in my possession. It has made a real and tangible
connection with my father's past. Thank you Roger.</blockquote>
<blockquote><small>Roger Thompson has kindly provided just about
every name and fact about Sidney and his decedents of New Zealand and
without his help I would still be mostly in the dark about his
family.</small>

</blockquote>
I seem to remember a legend of Alfred attending a school of some
sort. Perhaps on growing apples? He next shows up near the Richland,
Washington (ca 1930), area where he managed an apple orchard which was
acclaimed to be one of the finest in the state. Somewhere there is a
newspaper clipping (lost and I haven't been able to find it again),
claiming him to be the "Apple King". I remember reading it! Youth is
wasted on young people! I am not sure how long he remained here but
this is where he probably met his wife and my mother, Velma Marie
Clayton. How their meeting came about is as yet a mystery, Velma was
never in Seattle and she was born and raised in eastern Washington
State. Alfred got around. I remember her talking about being 'burned
out and losing everything' in a fire that took their house and
possessions. This brings up a question of how did the letters from <a
href="http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cherrytree/letters/"
target="_self">&nbsp;letters&nbsp;</a>England survive? The time span
of these letters is from 1930 to 1938 and the 'burnout' previous to
1932.

Prescott, Washington is the next place we find them and where
they involved themselves in a farm growing corn, I believe. This
information came from Betty Thompson and I have no memory of my
parents talking about this period. This period was obviously hard
because when the market went down for corn they lost all forcing them
to move again to a small place on the border of Washington and Oregon
states near Walla Walla, Washington where they started a small dairy
with a few cows.
During WW2 they moved from there to a farm of about 40 acres SW
of Walla Walla where they raised their milk cows. (Some of my fondest
memories come from this place and occasionally we drive by just to see
what it looks like.) They were again forced to sell out when
technology and costs became too much for a small farmer to maintain.
Their final move was to Milton-Freewater, Oregon and five acres where
Alfred grew produce of various varieties before passing away.

Member of Baptist Church. Member of Seattle IOOF Lodge.

Brothers are Jabez of England and Sidney of New Zealand. Also a sister
named Maud of Stopsley, Luton, Bedfordshire.

Cause of death: Adeno Carcinoma of Stomach. Twenty-three days in
hospital. Buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milton-Freewater, OR.

From an email from Ann Mansey <[email protected]>:

"Round Green is just outside of Luton. On the Hitchin Road there was
a large house called "The Chase" Nursing Home which is now demolished,
the house was possibly Victorian. (Although it could be possible that
this was the birth place of Alfred it is not likely, as it was common
to have births at home, either of their parents or their own homes
where nursing help would be available.)

Stopsley is just a little further along the Hitchin Road. Round Green
was a small place, with just a few shops and houses lining the road
which would have been built for the workers of Luton. Luton was
famous for its Straw Hats and so many people were employed in the "hat
trade". Round Green is probably now incorporated into Luton." Parents: Alfred CHERRY SR and Sarah Ann COOK.
