His grand daughters Betty, Una and Lorraine remembered him having a second name beginning with A. The names "Adelphi, Adelphia and Adelphus" have all been mentioned in the past. There is one "official" record that specifies a middle of "Adolphus" - the death record of his daughter Hilda Maude Thompson. However it needs to be noted that this name would almost certainly have been supplied by one of his three granddaughters to the registering authorities. Sidney left England and went to New Zealand sometime in 1909. Married to Liz before 1904. A daughter named Hilda was born in 1904. Her uncle Alfred, according to a letter from Liz to Velma Cherry, dated 2/7/33, supposedly named her. From this letter it is assumed that Sidney and Liz were married in England and then moved to New Zealand. The letter goes on to say that "Alf came to Stopsley 29 years next December ending and my daughter was born during the few days he spent there and he gave her the name of Hilda which she detests as she often says. 'Whatever made my Uncle give me such a name'." Hilda had two children, both girls, named Betty and Una?. Another one on the way was born Larriane Velma ca 1935. WLC ============= The following is from a person in NZ that volunteered her time to look for the grave sites: Subject: Cherry Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 17:30:03 +1300 From: [email protected] To: "Wesley L. Cherry" <[email protected]> Hi Wesley! Success! It being a rainy day I took up your request this afternoon and spent my time at the library and found your uncle and aunt and their daughter. They are all buried together at Sydenham Cemetery in Somerfield (on Simeon Street, if you have a map), Christchurch. So after my stint at the library I went to find their plot but as yet no success (will keep looking when I have the time - it is no more than 100m away from my son's school so location-wise is very convenient for me). I have a transcript for their headstone which I found at the library: Sydenham Cemetery, plot 332: Elizabeth, wife of Sidney CHERRY d. 1 Mar 1959 a. 85 Also her husband Sidney d. 15 Feb 1973 a. 76 Also infant daughter, Betty Sarah Jane, d. 21 June 1919 a. 1 yr 9 months I am pretty sure that Sidney's age of 76 is a transcription mistake, more like 96, and when I find the headstone I will check that for you. I also checked some electoral rolls: 1925 Christchurch - Sydenham District CHERRY Sydney, hat manufacturer, rate payer, 43 Durham Street (same year supplementary; Central District) CHERRY Sydney, hat manufacturer, rate payer, 336 Barbados Street 1935 Christchurch CHERRY Sidney, hat manufacturer, rate payer, 336 Barbados Street CHERRY Elizabeth, housewife, rater payer, 336 Barbados Street I drove past 336 Barbados Street and the old building is still standing but looking quite the worse for wear. It is an old Victorian era villa made of wood (painted yellow-cream at the moment) with a brick divide as it is in the center of the city and fairly close to its neighbouring house. I couldn't see much however as it is behind a high fence. I also went past 21 Dublin Street and that appears to be "Wesley Lodge", a retirement home. It is very close to the main central park (Hagley Park) and would have been a very nice place to spend one's last years, I should think. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with, with this family. It was a fun diversion for the afternoon and since my own research has come to a temporary halt, quite welcome indeed!
