"- - Quite a lot of building took place in the village soon after 1860. The old Post Office in Bury Road and the First and Last building are from that time. By 1880 a row of four cottages had been built at the corner of Putteridge and Ashcroft Road Elm House (671 Hitchin Road) was built by Joseph Weatherhead, "a man of private means" about 1888. The Baptist builder Jabez Cook, erected a block of four terrace houses on the north side of the village Green. These were pulled down in the 1960's to extend the Garage forecourt. A second row of three that once included a shop (beside Harris's Lane), still survives. Cook was also responsible for the four Park Road Cottages and the two Laurel Cottages (1894) on Putteridge Road. Other terraces were built on Hitchin Road opposite Venetia Road (Sommerfield site), and on Ramridge End Road (67 to 97 Ashcrofi Road). George Duberly of Bury Farm built the Marsom Place terraces in St Thomas's Road in 1903. Other private houses of the period still standing include Stopsley House (589 Hitchin Road). Rose Cottage (1 St Thomas's Road), Jutland House, built in 1916 (618 Hitchin Road), and an unnamed house (21 Ashcroft Road)."
