John enlisted in Company A of the 85th Illinois Infantry
Regim ent on July 18, 1862. This was the same day that his
brother Levi S. Anno enl isted in I Company of the 85th Regiment.
John enlisted as a private. The regi ment was involved in a
battle at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia on July 19, 1864. John Anno
died of his wounds on July 25, 1864. He is buried in section G
gra ve 1364 Peach Tree Creek battlefield. The 85th had 86 men
who were killed or died of wounds. The regiment had 131 men
that died of disease or accident.
H is widow Laura A. Anno filed for pension on September 22, 1864.
His daughter L aura A. filed for a pension as a minor child on
April 30, 1868. Laura A. Anno married second Joseph Anno on
June 2, 1867 in Mason County, Illinois. Joseph was a brother to
John F. Anno.
A Mary E. Anno married Alvin D. Hammer on Feb ruary 24, 1880 in
Mason County, Illinois.
Four of Thomas Anno's sons served i n the Union Army during the
Civil War. Henry Anno, Jr. died in service of the Union during
the Civil War. He died at a hospital in Vicksburg, Mississippi
in 1863. John F. Anno also served in the Union army and he was
killed in a b attle near Atlanta, GA. in July 1864. Levi S. Anno
enlisted in Company A of t he 85th Illinois Inf. on July 18,
1862. He also died of wounds. Nelson Anno also served in the
Union army.
John F. Anno married Laura A. Bertram in Mason County, Illinois
on January 29, 1857. Parents: Thomas ANNO and Sarah BUNN.

from Edwards CO., IL. The 1830 US Census for Wabash CO., IL lists a
John and Mary Ano as heads of households. In the 1850 Federal Census
for Schuyler County, Illinois are listed a John H. Anno and Steven T.
Anno side by side. John H. is 53 years of age born in New York. His
occupation is listed as laborer. Nancy Anno is 53 years of age born
in Illinois. There are three children listed Nancy J. age 17, Lydia
M. age 13, and Elizabeth age 7 years. All the children were born in
Illinois. Steven Anno living next door is 29 years of age born in
Illinois. Lucinda Anno is 27 years of age also born in Illinois.
There are three children living in the home: Clarissa Anno age 7 born
Illinois, William Loren age 8 born Illinois, and John H. Loren age 1
born in Illinois. In the 1860 Federal Census for Wabash County,
Illinois is listed a John Anno, Sr. age 63 born in New York. Living

Census Coffie County, John J. Anno was born in Clermont County, Ohio
in 1830. The 1860 US Census Coffie County, Kansas Pottawatomie
Township lists a John Anno and Veatis. John Anno's birth place is
listed as Ohio in 1830. Their son William H. was listed as being
born in Iowa. Luther was born in Kansas about 1858. The 1880 US
census Holt Co., MO. Lewis Township lists John Anno's wife as
Beatrice.
In the 1880 census are listed four children ages 8 to 14, all born in
Kansas. This puts the family in Kansas from at least 1866 to 1872. A
James Anno is listed in the 1852 Taylor Co., Iowa Census. James is
living in Polk Township. There is also listed a Mary Hudson living in
Polk Township. This is probably the mother of James's wife.

In the 1853 Taylor County, Iowa Benton Tax list there is a John Anno
age 26 born in Ohio. Also, listed is his wife Veathes Anno age 21
born in Kentucky. A William W. Anno age 1 born in Iowa is also
listed. The 1853 Benton, Iowa tax list contains a Samuel Anno and Ame
Anno. Samual is most likely his brother. John Anno is also listed in
the Taylor Co., Iowa, Benton tax list for 1854. John J. Anno and
family lived in Taylor Co, Iowa from at least 1852 to 1854.

There is an Anne Anno Van Metre born April 9, 1812 or 1815 who died
April 14, 1882 buried in the Van Metre Cemetery, Benton Co., Iowa.
This could be the Ane Anno listed in the tax records. The cemetery
record was recorded by Susan K. Soden July 14, 1997.

The 1900 US Federal Census for Kansas lists a John Anno, age 69 born
Ohio and wife Beatrice M. born April 1834 in Kentucky. They are
living in Atchinson City on 424 N. Second. This is in Atchinson
County, Kansas. Living with them is their son Samual F. born February
1874 in Kansas. The marriage record (Aug. 7, 1901) of James G. Anno in
Muncie, Delaware Co., Indiana list his parents as John V. Anno and R.
S. Hudson.James G. Anno is listed as a boarder in Muncie, Delaware
County, Indiana in 1900. Parents: William ANNO and Mary Ann BUNN.

John L. ANNO was born on 16 Jan 1867 in Forrest Twp., Holt CO., Missouri. He died on 21 Dec 1932 in Forest City, Holt, Missouri. John L. Anno was born in Andrew County, Missouri. His father
came to Holt Cou nty in the early 1850's when Forrest City was a
steamboat landing. He later m oved to Andrew County, Missouri
where he married, and in 1868 returned to Holt County and
started farming. At first they rented land from George Hartman,
later buying a portion of the tract. John L. Anno worked with
his parrents cl earing the land. When 22 years old he had saved
money and with his father bou ght an additional 80 acres. When
the estate was settled after his father's de ath he bought the
interest of the other heirs. Later, he bought 107 acres in the
southern section of section 28.
In the 1900 US Federal Census for Missour i John L. Anno and wife
Leana C. are living in Forest Township, Holt County, M issouri.
John L. is listed as 33 years of age born January 1867 in
Missouri. His wife is listed as 27 years of age born February
1873 in Missouri. There are three children all born in
Missouri: Gerald W. age 6, James R. age 3, Leon a R. age 1.
Also, living in the home is Susannah Anno age 73 mother of John
L ., and Charly C. age 20 brother.
In the 1910 US Federal Census Holt County, Mi ssouri is listed a
John Anno and Leona his wife. Leona is listed as age 37 bo rn in
Missouri. There are four children listed all born in Missouri:
Worth a ge 16, Robert age 13, Ruth age 11, and Wilma age 5. Parents: James B. ANNO and Susannah WILHOIT. Parents: Susannah ANNO.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Atchison County, Missouri is
liste d a John S. Anno age 36 born Missouri and his wife Dolly F.
age 30 born in Mis souri. There are two children listed both
born in Missouri: Helen age 11, and Eileen age 3 years 10
months. The family was living in Tarkco (sp?) on Pine Street.,
Atchison County, Missouri. Parents: . Parents: ANNO and Daughter RILEY. Parents: William ANNO and Susan HALE.

John W. ANNO was born on 29 May 1901. He died on 5 Sep 1901. Parents: John Larry ANNO and Ola CRUTCHFIELD.
Joseph ANNO was born about 1750 in Coventry Parrish, Worchester, Maryland. He died in May 1795 in Somerset Co., Maryland. He was buried in Somerset Co., Maryland. From Maryland

In 1784, John Waller, Edward Waller and George Lewis erected a
blockhouse at the mouth of Limestone Creek. Daniel Boone lived there
during the year of 1786 . This was the beginning of the Settlement of
Limestone. Limestone was established as a town by the Virginia
Legislature in 1787. The name was changed to Maysville about 1790.
Limestone was the principle point where immigrants landed, and through
which merchandise and supplies passed to the Kentucky interior.

The earliest reference I located to the family name in the colonies
was a Mary Ano located in Maryland 1663 to 1697. The father of Joseph
Anno is unknown. His father would have been born circa 1730.

On February 14, 1716 a John Anno married an Elizabeth Smith in
Suffolk, Boston,
Massachusetts. Joseph Anno married Rebecca Hart December 26, 1716
also in Boston. Either of these two Anno's could be Joseph's father or
grandfather. On reference (The History of Champaign, Ohio ) lists
Joseph and Esther as living in Coventry Parish, Worchester County,
Maryland in 1767.They had five children listed; Henry born 1775,
Elizabeth, Sarah, William, born April 1781 and John. The Somerset
County, Maryland tax list for 1783, Great Annamessex 100, lists a
Joseph Anno owning no land with 5 male whites and 5 female whites
living in the home. This could be Joseph Anno. Another source lists
the
name as Joseph Anno, SO Great Annamessex, page 93. He had no land
listed.

The will of Stephen Milcah was written 29 September 1788, and probated
5 February 1789. The witnesses were Nancy Anno, Elizabeth Anno and
Catherine Maddux. If these Anno's were at least 18 years old, their
birth dates would be before 1771.

The will of Stephen Tull was written 12 November 1794 and probated 31
March 1795. The witnesses were James Smith and John Anno. These
maybe the brothers and sisters or children of Joseph Anno.

The will of a Joseph Anno was probated in Somerset County, Maryland on
May 19, 1795. The will had been filed 24 September 1794."To sons -
William and Joseph, friend Samual Smith exet. to wife Nancy exec., To
three youngest children Leah, Samual and one to be named Peggy." The
witnesses were Peter Waters and Jonathan Hamman.

The will of James Anderson was filled on October1827 and probated 16
January 1830. "....to my relative Samuel Arno."

The History of Champaign, Ohio lists Joseph and Esther Anno as living
in Coventry Parish, Worchester County, Maryland in 1767. It appears
that this family moved to Mason County, Kentucky ca 1790. There were
six Anno's married in Mason County, Kentucky between 1797 and 1805:
Henry, John, William, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Rebecca. The will of
William Anno list his parents as Joseph and Esther. Parents: ANNO.

Spouse: ESTER\ESTHER. Joseph ANNO and ESTER\ESTHER were married about 1767 in Worchester Co., Maryland. Linda Duzan Burris Children were: Sarah ANNO, John ANNO, Henry ANNO, Elizabeth ANNO, William ANNO SR, Rebecca ANNO.

Joseph Anno is living with his paren ts Thomas and Sarah in the
1850 Illinois census for Mason County. He is liste d as 12 years
of age born in Illinois. I did not locate Joseph in the 1860
I llinois census.
Joseph Anno enlisted Company E of the 27th Illinois Infantry
Regiment on August 12, 1861 as a private. The 27th Regiment was
organized wit h only seven companies at Camp Butler, Illinois on
August 10. 1861. On Septemb er 1, 1861 the regiment moved to
Cairo, Illinois where an additional three com panies were added.
The 27th Regiment was consolidated with the 9th Illinois
I nfantry regiment. Joseph Anno applied for a military pension
on August 12, 18 65.
Joseph Anno married Mrs. Laura A. (Betram) Anno, widow on June
2, 1867 in Mason County, Illinois. John F. her first husband and
Joseph were brothers. In 1880, the family was living in Manito
Township, Mason County, Illinois. Jo seph Anno is listed as 40
years old born in Illinois. Laura A. is 39 years of age born in
Illinois. Living with the family are; Florinda Anno age 22 born
Illinois, Emma Anno age 11 born Illinois, Rebecca D. Anno age 9
born Illinois and John B. Anno age 4 born Illinois.
Florinda Anno could be a child from Lau ra's first marriage to
John F. Anno in 1857. Florinda Anno is buried in the O ak Grove
Cemetery in Mason County, Illinois. She is buried with Joseph
and L aura A. Anno. Florinda was born 1858 and died 1926.
Joseph is listed on the g ravestone as born December 9, 1839 and
died October 2, 1912. Laura was born O ctober 24, 1840 and died
October 22, 1911. Florinda could be a nickname for L ucinda A.
Anno listed in the 1860 census.
In 1900, Joseph Anno is still livin g in Mason County, Illinois
in Manito Township. In the 1900 census Joseph is listed as born
December 1839 in Illinois. Laura A, his wife, was born October
1840 in Illinois. Living with them is Florinda, a daughter,
born April 1858 in Illinois. Berf. a son, age 24, born July
1875 in Illinois is living with the family. This Berf is
probably John B. Anno. Clarence Hamm, grandson, bor n September
1888 in Illinois is living with the family. It appears that
Emma or Rebecca D. Anno married a Hamm about 1887.
In the 1920 census for McClain County, Illinois is listed a
Burges Anno, age 44 born in Illinois. His wife H elen is 38
years of age also born in Illinois. This makes his birth year
187 6, which matches with Berf. Anno. They are living at 1303
Main Street, Bloomi ngton, Illinois.
There were six or seven Anno's who server from Illinois in th e
Union army during the Civil War; Ames Nelson Anno, Henry Anno,
James W. Ann o, John F. Anno, Joseph Anno, Levi S. Anno and
Nelson Anno.
A Joseph Anno mar ried a Mrs. Laura Anno on June 2, 1867 in Mason
Copunty, Illinois.
A Joseph A nno enlisted in the 27 regiment Company E of the
Illinois infantry. The 27 In fantry Illinois Volunteers was
organized August 10, 1861 with 7 companies. Se ptember 1, 1861
the regiment was ordered to Cairo where its organization was
completed with the addition of three more companies. At the
battle of Belmont , MO., on November 7, 1861, it received its
first baptism of fire, when it for med the right wing of the
attacking force. The regiment was relieved from dut y and
mustered out September 20, 1864. During the term of service the
regime nt had the following casualities: 102 killed or died of
wounds, 80 died of dis ease, 328 wounded, 209 discharged for
disability and resignation, 39 transferr ed. Its veterans and
recruits were consolidated with the 9 Illinois Volunteer
Infantry. Joseph Anno is listed in the 9th Regenent, company E
(consuldated ).
The 1880 US Census for Mason County, Illinois - Village of
Mantino - list s a Joseph Anno, age 40 born Illinois, and his
parents were listed as being bo rn in Ohio, Wife Laura A. Anno
age 39 born Ill., Parents: Thomas ANNO and Sarah BUNN.

Josephine S. ANNO was born on 1 Dec 1909. She died on 30 Jul 1933. Josephene S. Anno attended Park College, Parkville, MO. during
the years 1928 & 1929. She contracted tuberculosis and died at

Levi S. An no enlisted in the Union Army on July 18, 1862 as a
private and Levi served fo r almost three years. He enlisted in
I Company of the 85th Illinois Infantry Regiment. The 85th
Illinois Regiment was organized at Peoria on August 27, 18 62 and
was mustered out of service on June 5, 1865. The companies A-K
were fo rmed in Mason, Fulton, Menard, Woodford, Tazewell and
Schuyler Counties Illino is. The Regiment went into battle
almost immediately after being formed. The y were organized in
September 1862 and were in action at Perryville in October 1862.
At Perryville they made a bayonet charge at 3 o'clock in the
morning.
Four of Thomas Anno's sons served with the Union army plus a
grandson. John F. Anno enlisted in Company A of the 85th on the
same day as Levi as a private . Levi had an older brother named
John. Both Levi and John listed their home as Mason County,
Illinois. Levi transferred from I to A Company on August 1,
1862. Perhaps he changed companies to be with his brother.
Unfortunately Jo hn F. Anno was killed at the battle of Peach
Tree Creek, Georgia on July 19, 1 864. James W. Anno, a grandson
of Thomas Anno, was killed at Kenesaw Mountain , Georgia on June
27, 1864. James was serving in the 103rd Infantry Regiment.
Joseph Anno another brother of Levi's served in the 27th
Illinois Infantry, Company E. Joseph survived the war and
married Parents: Thomas ANNO and Sarah BUNN.
