If not the first settler in what is now Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, he was among the very first -- he took up a tract of 304 acres from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, paying three pounds, four shillings and three pence. John has 3 acres cleared for farming before the start of the Revolutionary War, during which he served as a Private under Captain Lewis Farmer's Pennsylvania Rifle Regiment in 1776. Returning to his home near Mahanoy Church, John Latsha followed farming until his death in 1810 at the age of 57. He was buried on his farm 1.
