The youngest son of Richard Phillips; John was born in Weymouth in 1672. A country in turmoil during King William's War -- the French and English colonists were preoccupied in raiding each other's settlements. When New England raises an expeditionary force in 1690, eighteen-year-old John Phillips takes part in the regiment that captures Port Royal in Nova Scotia and unsuccessfully attacked the French in Quebec. Upon returning home; John marries Elizabeth DRAKE, the sister of his brother Joshua's wife, Amy. Settling in Easton Massachusetts, John Phillips becomes a prominent citizen there - serving as Town Clerk for twelve years, Selectman for six, and was a representative to the Colony General Court in 1754. When a company of militia is formed in Easton, John Phillips is appointed Captain, and ever after was known as "Captain John".
