During the thirty years from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the beginning of the Great Famine of the late 1840's; a million Irish emigrants sailed from Ulster and Connaught to Philadelphia and New York, where "their vast number[s]" astonished earlier settlers - Patrick and Mary Cuff arrive in New York May 4, 1842 aboard the Barque Oberlin by way of Liverpool. When Patrick dies at the early age of 52, he is put to rest at the Irish Grove Parish just outside the township of Rock Run in 1847, leaving his wife and two young sons -- Thomas 3, and John 2.

Patrick CUFF b. 1795 Ireland1, m. Mary [unknown] b. Abt 1810 Ireland. Patrick died 24 Oct 1847 at the age of 52 and is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery at Irish Grove Stephenson County, IL. The last we know of Mary is the 1870 census having the 56 year old living with son John and his family at Ridott, IL. She's nowhere to be found in the 1880 census where the Cuff brothers have moved on to Nebraska.

  1. Thomas H. CUFF
  2. John W. CUFF b. Abt 1845, Rock Run IL, m. Ellen KELLY in Stephenson County, IL.

1 There is no smoking gun that absolutely places Patrick in our family tree, but the names, places, dates and circumstances align extremely well. I rate it as highly likely.
