At the age of three weeks, his parents took him back to Sweden with them - his passage cost $3.00; the cost of the canned, condensed milk used to feed him. He grew up in Sweden, and told us tales of witches that couldn't cross running water. He returned to the US as a teen, and somehow made his way down the coast from New York City to Chincoteague Island, working as an able-bodied seaman and fisherman.
