I need some help with solving a family mystery as to the origins of my GGGrandfather John Utick born Amoy 1803 bought for 13 pounds by Alexander Berry and came on contract to Australia aboard the Spartan in May 1852 1 of 8 laborers.
He was 47 and possibly left a family behind.
Listed as YOO/TICK/LINK in early records and the same in THE BERRY PAPERS
He married Louisa Amelia Lowe. Marriage Cert. Lists his last name as Manni first name Utio.
His children (10) are born under the surnames :Utick and Mann/Manni/Manui/Manns.Boys all marry and die named Utick/Eutick.All very confusing.
My GGrandmother was his second born who married a Scot and the chinese background was kept a secret as violence against the chinese was horrific at that time.
I feel sad that I am ignorant concerning my chinese ancestry and as I look Eurasian people often inquire as to my ethnic background.I wish to cure this ignorance and to one day have an answer about my heritrage. I am happy to start with his name.
Michaela
