Thelma,

As you may know, most of the early Chinese who migrated to Hawaii were from the Zhongshan district (formerly spelled Chungshan) of southern Guangdong Province (formerly spelled Kwantung or Kwangtung). Leong is a fairly common Chinese surname in Hawaii. I have a coffee table-style book which lists several prominent Leong's in Hawaii which may or may not be of interest to you: Leong Chew, an early merchant who operated Leong Chew Co., a dry goods store; Leong Wah See, a Punaluu rice planter (wife named Leong Chun Kam Oi); Lau Fat Leong of L. Ah Leong Co.; Yau Sing Leong, son of Leong Wah See; and Ah Hoy Leong, migrated from Shekki, China to work at Ewa Plantation. The name of the book is "Sailing for the Sun - The Chinese in Hawaii 1789-1989" edited by Arlene Lum.

Hope this helps, or at least gives you some ray of hope that there may indeed be informational leads to the Leong side of your family tree. Good luck........

Raymond
