Dear Margie,
I am also researching my family tree and in particular my great great grandfather ''Tom GAM''
As far as i know he was born in Amoy (amoy is now called Xiamen )China and came to australia in the early to mid 1800's for the gold rush in Ballarat( Victoria)Australia.
Myself and other relatives have come to the conclusion that GAM was not his real Chinese sirname and more than likely TOM was not his first name either. Could FAM be his chinese sirname ?? What we do know is that Tom married a German lady named Barbara Leichliter and they had 14 children and they lived at Wyong NSW Australia. Does the name Tom Gam ring any bells with you? Looking forward to your reply,
Vicki
