Whether you spell it Hiem or Him, in Indonesian it is still pronounced the same, just like Liem and Lim.

As for your HK friend, if he is Cantonese and unless you are also Cantonese (I believe you are Hokkien) then it may not be the same surname; I have yet to come across a 謙 surname...you said "name" which means his personal name and perhaps not his surname?

Please clarify before I try to figure out the possible Chinese character for Him surname. Can you explain why the personal names are different, are you talking about the same man?
