I have the same last name also. My grandparents were from China, but I'm not sure what location though. Their dialect is Teochiu. They moved to Cambodia in the early 1910's or so. My grandfather's surname is Tang but when he had kids it was changed to Taing because at that time Cambodia was a colony of France, so I assume that's how the French translated it? Or perhaps it was how Khmer people did?
I did a research earlier today (out of boredom) and I found out that there are a lot of Taing's living in the same state as I am. I'm not sure if they're related though, but it's possible because I have a big family.
