Depends on what you are trying to accomplice. If you are trying to find relatives or just curious, then you have to find out the chinese character for Ong. Ong (in Hokkien/Minnan) can be 2 of surname that I know. Either it is Huang (yellow) in Mandarin (黄) or Wang (King) in mandarin (王). It is probably the latter. Ask your father or grandparents what the chinese character of the Ong surname. Huang is usually Ng or Uy in Hokkien. Now when I ask my parents about my grand parents, they almost always say they were from Amoy (a major city in fujian), but when I ask further detail, I found out that they were actually from town/village northeast of Amoy like Shishi ( Chio sai in hokkien) or JinJiang (ching kang in hokkien). Knowing your grandparents/ great grand parents name in chinese especially the chinese character will be helpful. My Paternal grandmother has surname of Ong (meaning king) from Shishi, Fujian or small town around it.
