My surname is Beh. Most of my relatives have the similiar sounding Bay. My paternal grandparents were from Teochew county, Gunagdong. In Teochew and Hokkien the name's meaning corresponds to "horse" and this is the Chinese character used. However this name seems to be quite rare in S'pore and as a surname amongst Teochews (who I believe is the only group using it). The "horse" character is used in other regions e.g. Foochow but the translation is in mandarin hence "Mah". Does anyone know the actual origins of the name?
