Are you sure it was US military. General Gordon was a famous British officer who assisted in crushing Taiping in China. Subsequently went to Sudan where he was killed. Plenty of books about him. More likely that the ship was either a British vessel or a Chinese owned ship with Chinese crew but British captain.
