Chinese arrived in North America much earlier than the l850's. Captain John Meares, Royal Navy, recruited about 70 Chinese on his voyages from China to British Columbia. They were capenters and Ship builers. His venture and exploration was to build a settlement and claim the territory for England. This was in 1788, 1789. These events were in Captain John Meares Log and Journal which are kept at the British Admiralty in England. These documenation are available for research. Although not documented, some of these Chinese settlers moved south to California and Mexico where they encountered other Chinese speaking the same language which led us to surmise that Chinese also migrated there in th 18th century. Although the settlents in Nootka Sound is no loner there, archaeologists has unearthed artifacts that there were settlents there.

Further to the subject of "first Chinese in North America", it was recorded by Capatain John Meares, Royal Navy, in his voyage in 1788,89. In his journal and ship Log he recorded that he recruited 70 Chinese capenters to make a settlement in Nootka Sound, west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He claimed this territory for England. It is most likely that these Chinese were from Fujian province, since the Chinese people there were noted for their seafaring ventures. There were also some shipwrecks on this coast dated back some 300 years, the wooden ships were of Asian origin. These information leads researchers to further ascertain the seafaring actvities of the Asian countries, perhaps, Japan, Korea and China.
