Order of Chinese names

Hi. My t gt grandfather was Cheong Shin Hun. I am trying to further my family research - but I wonder if I even have his name in the right order. This information and his name was written to me by an elderly relative ages ago - so I question it's accuracy. Once arriving in Australia, my gggrandfather called himself james ShanHun, does this mean that SHIN Hun was his surname?

Is anyone able to help me out? i apprciate all replies.
