Are you SURE the Davison was European? My g-g-father was born in Amoy and came to Australia in about 1850. He died in 1901. His surname was Davidson, and we thought he was from the UK until we got a copy of his death certificate which gave the names of both parents and his place of birth. Turns out he was full Chinese and changed his name sometime between leaving China and getting married in Queensland.
A copy of the death certificate seems a good place to start because it should give the above information, giving you your next direction.
