: My great grandfather was born in about 1824 and arrived in Australia in about 1850 from Amoy (this is listed as his birthplace on my grandfather's birth certificate).
: His father was Fu Pan, his mother Nam Chang.
: Until this year we had no idea of the Chinese ancestry as our family name was Davidson. The transition from a Chinese name to this European one took place sometime before marriage in 1864 in Ipswich, Queensland.
: Does anyone have any ideas about discovering this man's Chinese name? My research had stopped at this point and I have no idea of which direction to take.

Do you know where your ggr landed in Australia? If you do, you should check the government shipping archives--that's the best starting point.
