I can't really say where exactly the Kuah surname originated in China but from what I've heard from many who share our surname is that the Kuah, Kua, Qua, Quah, Kwa, Kwah or Ke(1)surname is usually associated with the hardware trade and come mainly from the An Khwei and Nam An provinces of China. Interestingly enough, several of the Kuahs I've met are still in the hardware and ship chandling trade.
