Hello there

My maiden name is WAN as well, though as you may have gathered from some of the other replies which you have had, that its quite hard to tell if we are from the same family if we just use the corrupted English version of our names.

My family's version of WAN is also pronounced YIN or EIN in Mandarin. I am told that the pictogram is the stylised pill-box hat with the wings and long tail that mandarins use to wear. The name was adopted because one of out forebears finally passed the imperial exams and won the right to wear one.

I am also told that I have a great- grandmother buried in Sun Wui village, but as far as I can find out at the moment, Sun Wui is a district in Canton and not a village. Can you or anyone else shed a light? My sister and I are currently trying to piece the family history together, as we are 2nd generation Straits born Chinese. Our Grandfather was one of a group of cousins who emigrated in the late 1890s. My father was born in Kuantan but went to University in Chengdu.

Are we related?
