Heres a histor on ma's

Ma evolved from the surname Ying(2). It originated from the legendary commander of Dongyi, Baiyi. Baiyi's descendents established the Zhao empire. During the reign of Emperor Zhao Huiwen, Prince Zhao She was made the official in charge of agricultural land taxes. Zhao She was an upright and just official who did not exercise favouritism towards the elites and nobles. As a result, he was highly regarded by the ruler. He was put in charge of agricultural taxes for the entire nation.

Later, when the Qin army invaded the borders of the Zhao Empire, Lian Po and Le Cheng were on the verge of surrendering. However, Zhao She refused to accede defear and insisted on fighting till the end. Eventually, he succeeded in defeating the Qin invaders and became a famous general. As a reward for his efforts, emperor Zhao Huiwen conferred on him the title Ma Fu Jun. His descendents later took the title's first character, Ma(3) as their surname. Therefore, it can be said that the surname Ma(3) came from Zhao She.
