: Are you sure it was US military. General Gordon was a famous British officer who assisted in crushing Taiping in China. Subsequently went to Sudan where he was killed. Plenty of books about him. More likely that the ship was either a British vessel or a Chinese owned ship with Chinese crew but British captain.

this ship was named for the civil war general who was on the staff of robert e. lee. i made a couple of trips on the ship as a fireman-watertender in the engine room. as to the number of passengers i do not know, i do remember they had passengers in the area where army troops would have been placed. it was quite a sight to see as most of these passengers were chinese, i had to go through their area several times and the smoking of opium was going on all the time. i had to hold my breath as i ran thru the quarters. this ship was built originally to be a cruiser for the navy but the war was winding down and it was made into a troopship.when the war was over it became leased to the american president lines and was operated by them as a liner on the pacific ocean. alan collins p.s. the ship was originally built for the u.s. coast guard it was used to transport troops to the island battles.
