Lisa,

This is not really an answer to your question... I just wanted to say that I'm sorry about your father.
My father (Louie Wing Don) was from Toishan and passed away 4 years ago, and I have vowed to visit Toishan
someday, so it felt good to see your post. I had been assuming all this time that Toishan was just a
small village, but it seems from the responses you've gotten that it's not. Good to know.

The only tidbit I have to offer is this: One of my cousins (whom I don't speak with very often) went
back to visit around ten years ago, and I remember my dad shaking his head and laughing at him,
because my cousin was going to visit the village empty-handed. I guess if one is going to visit his/her
home village, that person had better be prepared with plenty of gifts for the long lost relatives
(according to Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior, you may suddenly have twice as many
relatives as you would otherwise!). I'm not sure what kinds of gifts... anyone? Probably some money,
but nothing like a new stereo system or anything. I hope.

Rosa
