The character you have written is a Chinese surname, pronounced "zhan" (first tone) in mandarin Chinese ("zhan" in Pinyin romanization, "chan" in Wade-Giles). In Cantonese it is pronounced "jim" (high level tone), which is likely how it would have been pronounced in Hainan.
