Try the census for San Francisco for years that your grandfather was in SF. ie: every ten years US census from 1790-1920 available. Just narrow down a year and work forward or back the ten years. check by his last name, first name via the Soundex. Census microfilm are usually available through genealogy societies, family history center (Latter Day Saints, other research libraries. Call for availability.

Also, is there a gravestone to be translated in the states or China? Anyone else in the family with the ancestral listings?
