Presume your gggf is buried in Bendigo? Does his tombstone have Chinese inscriptions? If so, it should provide you with the information you are seeking. Based on the name Lee Chew, your surname should be Lee. I believe his date of birth is 1835.

: My G/G Grandfather Charles Lee Chew came to Bendigo, Victoria, Australia in search of gold. According to his marriage certificate His parents were Mong Shi and Lue she farmers of china. I think that it is the Taishan area in China they came from because most of the Chinese in Bendigo (Big Gold Mountain) Victoria came from that region. We even have a Chinese cafe named the Toi Shan. Charles lived here (Bendigo) nearly of his life. He was born in 1935 in China and died in 1921 aged 86. Charles dropped the Chew off Lee Chew and our surname became known as Lee.
: Can anyone help with the Mong Shi, Lue She, Lee Chew, and Ah chew Surnames. (some children were named Ah Chew as a surname) Darby Lee
