Fong is a surname that means "Square" in Cantonese (the dialect around Guangzhou). It could also represent my surname "Kwong" in the Toisan dialect, which is also not too far from Guangzhou. There were many Toisanese Fong's in the US in the early 1900's. I don't know whether Australia was a popular destination for people from Toisan at that time.
