Ah Sam was not your gggf's surname. His personal name was Sam. The Ah was an attachment to his personal name that is common practice by Chinese people.
: My G G Grandfather was called Thomas or Tommy Ah Sam who originated from Canton & arrived in Queensland,Australia in early 1850's. He married an irish lady called Rose ODonnell & had 12 children.One son (possibly George Ah Sam) was sent back to China at an early age. Thomas died in 1914 in Clermont, Queensland. If anyone can help me find out more of my Chinese heritage, I would love to hear from you. His parents are listed as Tommy Ah Nee & Ah Ke-ough.
