It turns out that Lau is a German surname that is not very common.

This is from an article posted at a Laurence Lau fan site:

How Lau, Brown Cow?

"It's a really common Chinese and Hawaiian name," says the very un-Chinese or Hawaiian Laurence Lau of his surname. The truth: It's an uncommon German name that means "warm."

"When I was a pre-law student at Columbia," he recalls, "I used to get this Chinese student newsletter every month, which I thought was pretty funny." The student group began collecting books for a Chinatown library, and Lau agreed to donate. Two weeks later, "there was a knock on my door. There were these two Chinese students standing there, saying, 'Hello, can we speak to Mr. Lau?' and I said, "Oh, yeah, the book drive!' I stopped getting the student newsletter after that."
