Hi,

My parents came from Zhongshan and they spoke a dialect not too different from Cantonese. A lot of the expressions and terminology are different from the Cantonese, but most Cantonese would understand the dialect. Leung Doo is also part of the current Zhongshan county; the dialect spoken there is another level further from Cantonese.

Funny thing is, when I visited Zhongshan late last year, most people I met couldn't speak the dialect.

: I know people from Zhongshan county speak a form of Cantonese dialect, but it is not the Guangzhou or Hong Kong standard Cantonese. Where is Loong Do in relation to Zhongshanshi? I have not been able to find it on my map. Can you tell me what is Mandarin for the Cheuk you mentioned? What does it mean? I was intrigued how Stephen thought it was Zhou and then Zhuo.

: : Hi Al,

: : Thanks for correcting me.

: : I assumed that since Stephen's family was from Leung Doo that he would speak that dialect (Loong Do in Cantonese). Wouldn't that be true? Chock would be very close to the Cantonese pronounciation of Cheuk for his last name.
