hello, i am singapore and also has the surname of Lim, Lim in chinese means forest and is pronounced as 'lin'. Our ancestor in (from what i can recall) Tang dynasty rescue the emperor in the forest and as a result he is given the surname of 'Lim', as after retirement, he moved to Fujian in china, and from there the name spread. now in spore there are many hokkiens and teochew by the surname Lim.
