Actually, western culture in the old days also put there surname first. E.g. Smith, John

for John Smith.

so in the same way it is as chinese culture.

In addition to my last post, this way of identifying people are still used nowadays on lists and birth certificates.

Well....in Australia anyway. Don't know about the world.
