Hi, do you happen to know which Chinese dialect your father-in-law spoke? Because pronunciation varies greatly depending on dialect or region. We speak Cantonese and my guess on "Mei-Lin" is mei=beautiful and lin=lotus flower (but it could mean forest or gem if it's Mandarin). I will consult my sister as far as what "Miu Lang" means.
