I speak chiu chow but its not educated it was taught to me by my parents. In chiu chow, we call ourselves (rough pronounciation based on english pronounciation) 'di chiu nang' which in my rough translation means 'Chiu Chow people' hope it helps and happy traveling

: Also, can anyone tell me what Hakka and teochiu speakers are usually called in China or Chinese...whenever I try to explainmy family history to Chinese speakers in America, they do not seem to quite understand (especially when it comes to TeoChiu).

: : Wow...i just wanted to say I think this website is great. It is a great tool for many of us who have in one way or another been detached from our past.

: : I am a student born and raised in Los Angeles, california by parents who were raised in Thailand, but have Chinese parents themselves.

: : My Father tells me that our original family last name was Ng and that his family is TeoChiu. I believe his father migrated to Thailand around the 1st half of the 20th century.

: : My mother on the other hand is Hakka and she told me her family name (before she married my dad) was Tang. I believe her father also migrated to Thailand during the 1st part of the 20th century.

: : I am extreely interested in learning more about my family history, but it is hard since my parents know a somewhat limited amount, and all my grandparents have now passed on.

: : This summer I plan to go to Thailand and may even get the oppurtunity to visit China. So that I amhoping I can somewhat trace my family roots, not only for my sake, but for the sake of my children and my future family.

: : I think that knowing the family history is an extremely vital.

: : Could someone please help me witha preliminary history of my family/family name if possible?
: : and provde me with some leads that I might be able to follow?

: : Thanks Much
