I know of a Lok family they are originally from Bao An (I think it's a county) in Guangdong. If your grandfather was Cantonese more than likely his surname Lok is the same as the one for camel.

These are the only Loks I know. I don't think it's that common. Here it's very common for the gravestones to have the persons name (characters) and village etc. Is it not the same there? If it is it might be a good place to start.
