The Loke in Loke Yew means "land". I believe the best solution to your quest is to find the grave of your grandfather and take a picture of his tombstone. If it contains Chinese, you will have the answers you seek.

: Hi.. I'd like to thank Lisa C., Kevin Lee and Al Chinn for your information. I believe with your help I will be able to trace my family members someday. Al suspects that I might be Hakka, but one of my some cousins says that we're Cantonese, others say "Kong Fu". I don't really know what are we. What I know is that my grandpa is a Chinese. Even my uncle with LEE surname says that my grandpa is a Cantonese (like him). In my birth place, I was told most of the Chinese are Hakkas. When I was small I saw some old women wore the rattan-woven big hat with cloth around it (my friend's family WONG). This really confuses me. I was told that my grandpa has relatives in Singapore but I am not sure. I've seen a road named LOKE YEW in Kuala Lumpur, and this puzzled me as well. My close relatives with LOK surname are helpless when it comes to tracing our roots. Some can speak Chinese dialects especially Hakka and Hokkien because of the influence of the majority. Another uncle says that my grandpa was a TEO Chew and this leads me to another confusion. Why do the HAN have so many tribes? My cousin said that, as he heard it from his grandpa (Lok Sui), our family are famous with Kung FU (Kun Tau). I don't know. As for the gravestone, I really don't know. Sometimes I blame my dad for all this - even my other relatives. What I want now is "I want to see my family members - the LOKs". Thanks for the help. God bless you.
